NASHVILLE, Tenn. - We've heard dozens of calls for broken pipes including one at the Ronald McDonald House. Several families were forced out this afternoon after pipes from the overhead fire sprinkler system burst. Several rooms are flooded tonight, and cleanup is going to be costly. Cleaning crews have been out there since 1pm this afternoon. They've headed home for the night, but will be back at it tomorrow. Meanwhile, 17 out of the 32 families staying there had to find somewhere else to go. What happened in a split second will take weeks to clean up. All 3 floors of the Ronald McDonald House flooded after piping burst in the overhead sprinkler system. The panicked staff was overpowered by the mess, using just trash cans to collect water until help could arrive.

Each second that went by the damage grew, as dirty water started spewing from the ceiling at 125 gallons/minute. It's a big job ahead for cleaning crews. From the looks of it, it's all bad. From top to bottom, room by room, crews armed with industrial fans and vacuums tried their best to clean up the damage. The drywall, light fixtures, carpets and bedroom furniture all need to be replaced. Meanwhile, the families staying at the nonprofit inn while their children are in the hospital, were forced out. Don't count on the Ronald McDonald House to be back in full operation for several weeks.

The sprinkler system where the leak started is part of a safety feature in case of a fire. A spokeswoman for the Ronald McDonald House says she doesn't know if this could have been prevented. She's reviewing the incident with higher ups. Meanwhile, do you know how to protect your home from flooding during cold weather?
