FOX News--Several students were injured, including two critically, Tuesday morning in a shooting at the Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, N.M., as children were being dropped off to start their day, authorities said.

The shooter is in custody and is believed to be a student at the school, Sabrina Morales, a spokeswoman from the Roswell Police Department said.

It is unclear what led to the shooting, but nurses treating a 14-year-old boy indicated that he was the shooters target. KLBK reported that the other student in critical condition is a 13-year-old girl. Both students were transferred to University Medical Center Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.

Lorena Beltran told the Albuquerque Journal her daughter, who attends the school, said a male student was shot in the face.

Roswell police say the school was placed on lockdown, and the suspected shooter was arrested. Age and other details on the suspect were not immediately released.

Police say the shooting happened at 8:11 a.m. local time Tuesday.
