CNN--Photos which purportedly show Marines burning the bodies of Irai insurgents were posted by TMZ.com and are now being investigated by the Marine Corps.

The photos published are just a small sampling of what the site says are a total 41 pictures in their possession. Believed to have been taken in the town of Falluja in 2004, the site says they contacted the Pentagon and turned the photos over to authorities.

PHOTOS: WARNING. Graphic Content

The Defense Department issued a statement in response to the pictures.

"The actions depicted in these photos are not what we expect from our service members, nor do they represent the honorable and professional service of the more than 2.5 million Americans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan."

"The Marine Corps is currently investigating the veracity of these photos, circumstances involved, and if possible, the identities of the service members involved. The findings from this investigation will determine whether we are able to move forward with any investigation into possible wrongdoing."

Only 8 of the 41 pictures have been posted because TMZ says the rest are too graphic to publish. The site claims there are images which show bodies being burned, one eaten by a dog and another of soldiers posing with a skull.
