COLUMBIA, Tenn. -- Columbia firefighters faced extreme conditions fighting a house fire just hours ago.

The Columbia Fire Department arrived to the two-story house at 1613 Highland Avenue just before 1 a.m., Thursday, to smoke and flames. All occupants made it out, but lost some pets in the fire.

At one point, a flashover occurred forcing firemen from the house. A flashover is defined as the near-simultaneous ignition of most of the directly exposed combustible material in an enclosed area.

The house took on heavy fire and water damage.

The fire is under investigation.
