Health Matters: Sleep Apnea and its Deadly Risks - Erika Kurre

A deadly sleep habit and you may not even know you're doing it.
Fox 17's Erika Kurre shows us how the way you're breathing at night could be a condition called sleep apnea, leading to premature death.

Gerard Wilkerson is among hundreds of patients a year Who seek help for sleep habits at TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center.

Dr. Robert McCain says sleep apnea is a condition that is increasing with the rise in obesity and could be deadly.

The problem begins with the floppy part of the back of the throat relaxing more than it should, interrupting your breathing.

The diagnosis is a surprise to many-- even after spending a night under study.

Dr. Mccain says treatments can be as simple as weight loss, sleeping with an air pressure machine called CPAP Or using a dental appliance to keep the jaw forward while you're sleeping.

As the condition becomes more common and can be so dangerous, many commercial drivers are now required to be screened for sleep apnea.
Dr. Mccain says the biggest challenge if diagnosed is managing the condition throughout your lifetime.
