Prescription Drugs Lead to Rise in DUI Cases - Erika Lathon

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- We know that drinking and driving don't mix but lots of motorists are getting arrested for a different type of impairment. Its a mixture of prescriptions drugs and alcohol. As fox 17's Erika Lthon reports just like alcohol these "legal drugs" can be just as dangerous behind the wheel. Tennessee has one of the nations highest rates of prescription drug use. Experts say the trend is leading to more DUI cases where drivers are impaired by either prescriptions drugs or a combination of drugs and alcohol. Substance abuse experts say many patients deliberately combine the two or underestimate the effects of medication. When it comes do DUI laws, attorneys say just like driving drunk,you can just as easily be convicted of DUI if you're using prescription drugs and unable to operate a vehicle safely. These case are on the rise and are expensive to the fight in court. Whether you're impaired by drugs or alcohol the consequences can be dangerous and even deadly.
