Mid-State Community In The Cold Without Propane

Jarred Shuel isn't happy to be missing two days of school this week. The Stewart County senior is out of class Thursday and Friday because of something even he says is hard to believe.

"I didn't think it would happen because where else does this happen where they have a shortage," said Shuel. That shortage involves propane gas.

All four Stewart County Schools heat with it or use propane in their water heaters. Assistant Director of Schools Leta Joiner says the tanks are currently just over half full and she doesn't know when that's going to change.

The district gets its supplies from Stewart County Propane and Joiner says the company says it's only delivering to residents right now. Businesses, churches and schools are not getting deliveries she says.

Stewart county has reached out to other propane companies and they are unable to help either because of a major propane shortage caused by the recent cold spell.

The district estimates its current supplies will run out next week if classes aren't canceled and that's a big deal.

"If we go completely out our buildings it stays this cold then things will freeze and we can't maintain the buildings," said Joiner.

To avoid the risk classes are canceled and the thermostats are set at 55 degrees inside.

It's possible if things don't change classes could be canceled next week too.

"I'd rather go back.  I'm ready to graduate and get stuff done," said Shuel.
