Department of Homeland Security Wants License Plate Database

FOX News-- According to a Washington Post report, the Department of Homeland Security has issued a solicitation notice seeking bids from companies which would help manage and collect data from license-plate readers.

DHS wants to create a national database of license plates based on information recorded by commercial and law enforcement tag readers. The cameras scan the tags of passing cars, allowing for law enforcement to use such data to aid investigations.

The data would be stored by a "commercial enterprise" and only be accessed by government and law enforcement agencies when needed in conjunction with criminal investigations.

The proposed data collection has stirred debate among civil liberties groups. An attorney with the ACLU said This is yet another example of the governments appetite for tools of mass surveillance....That poses the possibility of charting people's movements in great detail over time."
