Bill to Allow Wine in Grocery Stores Closer Than Ever to Passing

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Supporters of wine in grocery stores just won an historic vote tonight. For the first time ever, the bill advances out of committee and will face its final approval next week in the State House. When it comes to beer, Luke Cain knows his product. Wine is a different story. The HG Hill manager may need to start studying soon. That committee vote sent a bill allowing wine in grocery stores to the full House for a final vote. Bill Sponsor John Lundberg (R-Bristol) has made it this far because lawmakers like Matthew Hill (R-Jonesborough) who cast the deciding vote against the bill last year are now on board.

This year's debate has created a lot of give and take for both grocery stores and liquor stores, like the one Bard Quillman owns. Quillman says the key to final passage lies in keeping that compromise intact. Even in the meeting there were some who wanted to make small changes.

A complex deal that is finally on a path. It just might force Cain to clear out some space for wine. A few more important details about this: Communities would still need to vote to approve wine in grocery stores. That vote would happen next November. If approved, wine won't be allowed here until mid-2016.
