SAVING YOU MONEY:  Dress For Less

Stacy Case
Murfreesboro

There are many families in the Midstate who do not have $500 to spend on a prom dress for their daughter to wear one time.  Destiny Smith, a 17 year old Murfreesboro student, is one of those girls.  She explains why,  "At the moment we're having a little bit of an issue with money so not having to spend like $700 on a dress helps out a lot."

Smith  got the dress here, from Archie's Promise a non profit that's outfitted more than 850 girls for prom over the last 6 years.

People donate their slightly used dresses. So do bridal shops and stores like JCPenney and the girls whose families have fallen on hard times, still get to feel like a princess for a night.

Archie's Promise founder Claressa Ham says, "You have so many families that are trying to make ends meet, but they still want to provide for their child and have them go to that special event that they may not be able to go to, so that's where we step in."

Archie's Promise gives the dresses free to anyone on free and reduced lunch or whose parents are unemployed or disabled.  They also give free dresses to foster children.  You do have to bring your ID and paperwork to prove you qualify.  If you do not qualify for a free dress, Archie's Promise will sell you one for $25.

The big dress give away all culminates at Seigel High School in the 'Boro the second Saturday in March.

You can donate your slightly used dress at any Heritage Cleaners, Holiday Cleaners or Seigel High School.
