Marvel Comics debuts its new relaunch of Ms. Marvel today. While normally, the addition of a new character doesn't stir national attention, Ms. Marvel has received her fair share of the spotlight before the book was even released.

Why?

The new Ms. Marvel is Kamala Khan, a Muslim-American 16-year-old Pakistani girl living in Jersey City. It's a change of pace for Marvel Comics, which looks to be more inclusive to women with the future release of books for Black Widow, She-Hulk and Elektra.

According to a Washington Post interview, the publishers say it isn't about making a political statement, rather to "provide fascinating stories with compelling characters regardless of gender."

Thus far, the comic has been released to rave reviews on social media and has been praised for creating a complex character while breaking preconceived stereotypes.
