Fatal Bat Disease Found in Mammoth Cave

A disease deadly to bats has been found in toured areas of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. Officials said they will not change tour routes.

It is important to remember that White-Nose Syndrome affects bats, not humans, Superintendent Sarah Craighead said in a press release. As with all our wildlife, we caution visitors not to approach animals, including bats. If contact should occur, please notify a ranger.

Visitors will have to walk through bio-security mats as they exit cave tours.

White-Nose Syndrome, which affects bats and not humans, has killed millions of bats in the United States since it was detected in New York in 2006.
