NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Goodwill of Middle Tennessee is honoring Spring Hill employee Jose Ortega this month. Ortega had his dreams of getting a soccer scholarship to Vanderbilt shattered when an attempted robbery in 2007 resulted in Ortega getting shot in the back, hitting his spinal column.

Ortega was left paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. He was also just two weeks away from graduating with a medical assistant degree.

At first, dealing with his situation was not easy. Jose looked for jobs, but would continually face obstacles during the interview process. During job interviews, they would ask me if I could stand or lift 50 pounds. I threw in the towel at that point. I was very depressed.

But in 2011, Jose's mother and sister drove him to the Goodwill Career Solutions center in Spring Hill, where he not only was hired, he was given a new lease on life. Now, Jose is being honored for his service with Goodwill Industries and his interest in helping others who are in the same position he once was just a few years ago. When I was in their shoes, Goodwill gave me strength to continue with life. Its nice to be able to pay it forward.
