NASHVILLE, Tenn-- According to the annual Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, Tennessee ranks 44th among the 50 states in "well-being." North Dakota was ranked first in the nation and West Virginia came in last. Kentucky was ranked 49th.

The data scores states based on six "sub-indexes" which include life evaluation, emotional health, work environment, physical health, healthy behaviors and basic necessities. Based on a scale of 0-100, Tennessee scored a 64.3 and Kentucky scored a 63.0.

The index also examined data in politics, Religion and Economy. Gallup showed 54% of Tennessee residents interviewed disapproved of President Obama, compared to just 38% who approved. 54.3% viewed themselves as very religious compared to 16.8% who were nonreligious.

Economically, Tennessee did rank above the fray in hiring and the job creation index, but was among the lowest in the economic confidence index. As a whole, the state moved up three spots after being ranked 47 in well-being for 2012.
