CEDAR HILL, Tenn.-- A Robertson County sergeant survived two decades of defending the United States. Just days after his retirement was approved, the 38-year-old died rushing to help a woman being domestically assaulted in Washington.

Visiting a Cedar Hill cemetery near her home, is a heartbreaking new routine for Ellen Woods. She buried her husband, Sgt. Shawn Woods on Friday.

Ellen Woods said, "He was just extremely peaceful and gentle. He was my best friend.  "

The Washington state natives married when Ellen was just 18-years-old and Shawn was 20-years-old.

Ellen Woods said, "Everybody at our wedding was taking bets on how long we would stay married."

The gamble paid off. The couple was nearing their 20th wedding anniversary. They also created a small army of their own having two daughters and two sons. The military took the family across the country including in Tennessee.

Ellen Woods said, " His only dream was just that we could be here together and grow old together. "

The couple decided to buy a house in Cedar Hill, TN three years ago. The Woods wanted their children to have solid ground and the drill sergeant was moving back home this summer. Sgt. Woods was stationed at Lewis McChord in Washington, and rented a room in a South Hill home.

On January 19th, Woods came home and went to bed after spending time out with friends. While Woods was sleeping, one of his former roommates began arguing with her boyfriend, Chase Devyver. Ellen says the couple was outside of the home and as the woman approached the house, 29-year-old Devyver attacked her.

Ellen Woods said, "Started to stab her and Shawn her heard screaming and went out to try and stop it and that's when he got stabbed."

Ellen says her husband is a hero. He survived duties in Iraq and Afghanistan, and how her husband died is tough to take in.

Ellen says, "I know he was there for a reason to save her but it's hard to take."

The widow clings to loved ones and her husbands personal belongings like his dog tags, and his beloved Jeep.  She is finding some relief and also let her husband's killer know how impacted her life.
CLINGING TO  LOVED ONES AND HER HUSBAND'S THINGS , LIKE HIS BELOVED JEEP ELLEN IS FINDING SOME RELIEF--AND ALSO THROUGH A MESSAGE TO DEVYVER.

"I told him when he killed Shawn that day, he killed two people. He was my life. It's unfair that in a world full of bad people for him to be gone."

Devyver is facing charges of second degree murder for killing Sgt. Woods and attempted murder for attacking his girlfriend.
