7-Year-Old Cancer Patient Getting Better After Chimerix Allows Access To Drug

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

Thanks to people like you who united behind a grassroots campaign on social media, 7-year-old Josh Hardy is now on the road to recovery.

It all started when Josh's mom started a campaign to get drug company Chimerix to allow access to their antiviral drug brincidofovir. Josh, who has survived four bouts with kidney cancer, needed access to the oral form of the unapproved drug but Chimerix did not want to give it to him out of fear it could interfere with the FDA approval process.

But after a wave of criticism on social media and a flurry of phone calls and emails, Chimerix decided to allow Josh access. Now, his mother says the medication is working. Glory to God the medicine is working, she wrote on Facebook. Before Josh took the medicine the adenovirus showed up in his blood in 250,000 log copies. Today after only 2 dosesthe log copies are down to 1000! If it stays on this course, it should be gone by next Monday!!!!!

Josh has improved since his mother last posted and he is expected to leave the ICU department this week.
