EXCLUSIVE: Mother of Vandy Rape Suspect Speaks Out - Erika Lathon

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The mother of a suspect in the Vanderbilt rape case is using social media to express frustration with Tennessee prosecutors. Writing in an account reportedly linked to her, Shawna Vandenburg says, "have we gone back to the dark ages where we try people in secret?" The post is in reaction to a legislative bill that would not only shield a rape victim's identity, it would keep all information surrounding sexual assault secret unless it came out during a trial. On Monday a Chancery Court Judge heard arguments from the media coalition suing to gain access to records in the Vanderbilt rape case. Prosecutors, Metro Police and an attorney for the alleged rape victim are fighting to block access until the trial. Fox 17 News is part of the media coalition filing suit under the Tennessee Public Records Act. Chancery Court Judge is expected to issue a ruling this week.
