The Web is Not the Same as the Internet

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

On the 25th anniversary of the World Wide Web, its worth noting the Web is not the same as the Internet.

The Internet is much older. In 1958, the U.S. Department of Defense founded the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), which created a network of networks called ARPANET in 1969. It allowed computer systems to talk to each other like never before. It would eventually evolve into what we now know as the Web.

The Web is just one way of transmitting data across the Internet. Sir Tim Berners-Lee from the United Kingdom proposed the idea on March 12, 1989. If you typed fox17.com into your browser to reach us, you used the Web. If you are using our app (which you should, a lot, of course) you are using the Internet but not necessarily the Web.
