UT President Argues "Sex Week" Protected by First Amendment

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- In response to lawmakers who hope to put an end to the University of Tennessee's "Sex Week," University President Joe DiPietro is urging lawmakers to stop legislation which would penalize the school.

DiPietro says First Amendment protections prevent the university from stopping the week-long event. The event, now in its second year, ran from March 2-March 7th and featured panel discussions on sexual health, sexuality and sexual violence, as well as a drag show, dance classes and an art show.

The university had already pulled funding but a student group which organizes the event was able to raise private funding. If lawmakers penalize the school, they still might not be able to stop the event and could  "cause greater harm and damage to the long-term interests of the university than any programming that may occur as a result of Sex Week" according to DiPietro.
