A Putnam County grand jury has indicted Putnam County Property Assessor Travis Roberts with theft and official misconduct.

According to a Cookeville Police Department press release sent out Tuesday, the department
investigated allegations that property purchased by the Putnam County Tax Assessors Office was being taken and then sold for cash and/or narcotics.

On Tuesday, March 25, the grand jury returned a two-count indictment, charging Roberts with theft over $1,000 and official misconduct after it was presented with the results of the police investigation.

The Herald-Citizen reports that Roberts resigned from his position on Tuesday.

The release said the department was assisted by the Cookeville office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the state of Tennessee Comptrollers Office and the district attorneys office.
