Obamacare Deadline Arrives Tonight -- Sky Arnold

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Pebbles Nelson didn't want to be looking at health care options on the day of the Obamacare imposed deadline but that's where she found herself Monday afternoon.

Nelson just started a new job and was waiting to find out what insurance options it offered before choosing an Obamacare plan at a clinic at the downtown library.

"I knew I needed insurance and everyone I talked to that signed up had nothing but good things to say," said Nelson.

If Nelson had waited any longer she would have had to pay a penalty that's either 1% of her yearly income or $95, whichever is higher.

The penalty does not apply to people who make less than $10,150 a year.

Because so many people are trying to sign on at the last minute, the Obama administration is also giving people who start the process of getting insurance on and can't finish till April 15th to complete the process.

Still there are some like Jarvis Phillips who are purposely choosing to take part at all.

"I'll just pay it.  They charge us for everything else," said Phillips.

Phillips calls the penalty a liberty tax and he believes it's his patriotic duty to disobey a law he believes is not only wrong but unaffordable.

Phillips says the Obamacare plans he found were more than double what he had been paying before his old insurance was canceled.

Fox 17 News asked him what he'll do if he gets sick.

"I got a whole lot of faith in what I got going on with God," said Phillips.

Phillips is putting that faith in hopes he'll find an affordable plan on his own away from the Obamacare website Nelson says has been a welcome surprise.

"For the price and the various locations they're making available it's a great deal," said Nelson.
