Premature Baby Survives Illness By Being Put in Thermacol Box For 5 Months

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

FOX News--A family in India saved their premature baby's life by literally putting him in an ice box for five months.

Little Mithilesh Chauhan was born weighing a reported 3 pounds, 3 ounces. He was in need of constant monitoring due to being prone to infections, but the parents couldn't afford to keep him in the hospital's ICU department. After they had borrowed money from everyone possible and exhausted all options, they were faced with what looked like a dire ending for their child.

But a doctor offered some interesting advice. He told the parents to try putting their child in a Thermocol icebox, poke holes for ventilation and add a 60-watt bulb for warmth. It was a long-shot, but it was better than nothing. The parents bought the box from a nearby fish market and followed his instructions.

"It was awful," Aruna told Cover Asia Press. "We had no idea if it was the right thing to do, but we had to try something. We were terrified if we did nothing he'd die, but we were also aware that what we were doing wasn't exactly safe either. It was a very distressing time."

After spending an alleged five months in the box, Mithilesh survived. Now, he is reportedly getting 24-hour care from a children's hospital which heard about the story and are treating him for free.
