UPDATE (7:20 p.m.):  According to police, Susan Smithburg got upset with 16-year-old Christopher Smithburg before he ran away for telling a lie about making toast. As a punishment, she allegedly made him do 1,500 pushups. After about four hours of pushups, Christopher was reportedly unable to continue. It adds that Smithburg placed both hands on Christopher's head and slapped it "with some force."

Police also say Smithburg denied Christopher, who is adopted, food. Authorities said Christopher has two other adopted siblings, a 17-year-old brother and a 10-year-old sister, who are now in state custody.
