Woman Implanted with Fertilized Embryo of Another Woman

A woman in Italy was shocked to learn she was implanted with the fertilized embryo for twins of another woman, The Telegraph in the UK reported.

The name of the woman was not released, but the fertility mix-up happened at the Pertini hospital in Rome on Dec. 4.

The error was discovered when she had a prenatal check, and doctors learned her unborn children had different DNA from her and her husband, the newspaper reported.

It's believed it happened in part because the women had identical last names except for three letters.

Italian media reports she plans to keep the children. The biological mother would have no parental rights, since Italian law recognizes only the mother who gives birth.

Unfortunately, the other woman's pregnancy ended in miscarriage.
