Rutherford Co. Judges Won't Hear Mosque Cemetery Lawsuit- Erika Lathon

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.- Circuit Judges in Rutherford County are stepping aside and will not hear arguments in a lawsuit filed to close a cemetery at a local mosque. The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro buried two people in a graveyard on its property before plaintiffs filed suit to close the cemetery. The site was approved by the County's Board of Zoning and Appeals. Rutherford County Chancellor, Robert Corlew was set to hear the lawsuit but agreed to recuse himself at the request of John Green, the attorney for the Islamic Center. Opponents of the mosque have staged protests and filed lawsuits to stop construction of the mosque and Corlew heard many of the arguments. After Chancellor Corlew recused himself the rest of the circuit judges in Rutherford County also decided to step aside. As a result, a senior judge from outside the county will be appointed to hear the lawsuit.
