Man Breaks Into Home To Rape 4-Year-Old

A brazen convicted felon broke into a Calumet Park home, raped a 4-year-old girl while others were inside and then went into a closet at the residence and started smoking a cigarette, Cook County prosecutors said.

Demetrio Campbell was trying to get the victim and her older sister to come across the street to him when they were playing outside Sunday, States Attorneys Office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.

But the girls ignored the 27-year-old mans alleged request and ran inside the house, locking the doors.

Campbell then walked to the house and started knocking on the door, telling everyone inside to let him in, Simonton said.

Witnesses saw Campbell go across the street before he went back down to the house and kicked the door in, prosecutors said.

Once inside, Campbell ordered one of the two older people in the house to leave the bedroom, prosecutors said.

He then took the 4-year-old girl inside the bedroom and allegedly raped her on the bed.

The witness who was ordered to leave the room called police.

When police arrived, they found Campbell smoking a cigarette in a closet, Simonton said.

Judge Edward Bowden ordered Campbell, who is charged with  predatory criminal sexual assault and home invasion, held without bond Wednesday at the Markham courthouse, according to court records.

Bowden also ordered Campbell to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Campbell had been in and out of foster homes since he was taken away from his mother when he was 8, Campbells grandfather Charles Campbell said Thursday.

And Demetrio Campbell suffers from mental problems, the older Campbell said.

His mind is not too good. . . . He just talks crazy, Charles Campbell said.

Charles Campbell said he last saw his grandson a few weeks ago when he came to pick up his mail at the elderly mans Blue Island apartment.

He used to lived with his grandfather, but relatives believe Demetrio Campbell was currently staying with a girlfriend in either the Roseland neighborhood or Calumet Park, the south suburb where the attack occurred.

Despite his troubles with the law, Demetrio Campbells family didnt think he was capable of sexually assaulting a little girl.

Something must have snapped, Charles Campbell said.

Demetrio Campbells aunt Felicia Grinnage said she was startled by the allegations.

I cant believe it, she said.

Demetrio Campbell was sentenced to six years in prison for aggravated robbery in 2004. He was sentenced to four years in prison in 2008 for residential burglary.
