NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Measles cases are on the rise. The Tennessee State Health Department confirms five cases in the state. It's a first in three years, and nationwide it is at an all-time high for the past 20 years.

The metro health department says it's not just the sun or bugs that you need to protect yourself from this summer.

If  you go on vacation, traveling to places like Africa, Europe or Asia you should protect yourself from measles because they are common overseas.

Brian Todd says, " All the cases so far  in the United States have been people who have traveled to other countries where there is measles and they're bringing it back."

Brian Todd with the Metro health department says the five cases in the state--are all related and started with one person in West Tennessee. There are no cases yet here in  Davidson county.

Todd says, " Measles itself is a potentially deadly disease, it's respiratory illness. It's easily spread."

Tennessee cases have been confirmed in counties including Madison, and Shelby. Nationwide cases are at 288 this year. The state health department says measles cases were eliminated in 2000, but are now making a comeback.

Brian Todd says, "If you don't hear of a disease out there in the community, you're less likely to get the shot. "

The measles-mumps-rubella vaccine lasts a lifetime and consists of a shot usually at  young age, followed by a booster a few years later. If you are unsure if you  received the vaccine in the past, you can check your shot record.
