Arkansas Air National Guardsman Saves Daughter From Tornado

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

More and more stories of heroism during the tornado which ripped through Vilonia, Arkansas continue to emerge. The latest is of Master Sgt. Dan "Bud" Wassom II.

The Arkansas Air National Guardsman was a 12 year veteran serving the 189th Airlift Wing as a loadmaster. During the twister, Wassom huddled over his 5-year-old daughter Lorelai, protecting her from the collapsing home.

Wassom died in the process, but his little girl was saved. After arriving to the hospital, the Air Force Times reports she was proud of her father and understood his sacrifice. "Lorelai kept telling the emergency room people, my daddy saved me; the house exploded and my daddy saved me; he's a hero."

Wassom's wife is also a hero. As he protected their youngest, Suzanne Wassom shielded their 7-year-old daughter. Suzanne and the two girls were able to walk away and after making sure her daughters were safe, she went on to help a boy who lived across from them.

Wassom's mother Pamela says she was always proud of her son and the news of his heroics don't come as a surprise. "Even before he died, he was a hero. He served his country; loved his family, loved God; and he died doing what he did best: being a good father."
