EXCLUSIVE: Derek Dooley Helping former Commodore Chris Boyd, WR's Father says - Eric Alvarez

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Former Vanderbilt football player Chris Boyd is fighting for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys and former UT head coach Derek Dooley is helping him do it, the player's father said.

Boyd caught a touchdown pass when Vanderbilt beat Tennessee in 2012 41-18.  That loss marked the end of Dooley's tenure with the Vols.

Boyd's father says Dooley who is now a receiver's coach with the Cowboys is helping Boyd transition into the NFL.

"Dooley was the one that had made some contacts with Chris to make him feel comfortable," Steven Boyd said.  "I think that's all that chris wants is an opportunity to compete."

If Boyd does earn a spot on the Cowboys, he could return to Nashville when the Cowboys take on the Titans September 14 at LP Field.
