Nashville, Tenn -- There weren't many dry eyes in the circle of friends and teachers that gathered to honor Kortae Hughes Friday evening at HIllwood High.

"I know he's watching now sooner or later we'll be with him," said one student.

Hughes, 16, died Tuesday while swimming with friends at Percy Priest Lake. HIs body was discovered Thursday and identified Friday. The drowning is still hard for the teen's father Julius Flenoy to believe.

He says Hughe's has been swimming since he was four.

"I was wondering how in the world did he drown in that water cause he's a good swimmer," said Flenoy.

At Friday's vigil Flenoy watched as friends and teachers remembered his son's big personality and memorable smile.

"He had such a good heart and he was such a fun loving kid," said one teacher.

As chance would have it the tragedy is happening right as Hughes' family should be celebrating. The teen's older brother Isaiah is graduating next week.

"There's some stuff I wish I could say to him but all I can do is pray," said Isaiah Hughes.
