2014 Tennessee Pork Report

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

The ninth annual Tennessee Pork Report outlines more than 609-million dollars in what its authors say is fraud, waste and abuse. At the top of the list, 181-million dollars state auditors found was paid out in unemployment benefits to people who didn't deserve them. That list includes full-time state workers, dead people and jail inmates.

The merger of Memphis and Shelby County schools revealed 48-million dollars worth of equipment and supplies that were unaccounted for. The Beacon's Center's policy director Lindsay Boys says that includes: "laptops; hard drives and even cars."

In addition to perennial targets like subsidies to Tennessee state park golf courses, this year's pork report takes the entire park system to task over it's 1.5-million dollar operating subsidy. Also in the Beacon Center's cross hairs, the 750-thousand dollars metro government allocated for a sculpture to go outside the new convention center called "Stix." Beacon says that's an appalling 25-thousand dollars per stick.

The Beacon Center of Tennessee says it's "an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization dedicated to providing concerned citizens and public leaders with empirical research and timely free market solutions to public policy issues."
