UPDATE: Dozens of Animals Killed in Joelton Animal Rehab Facility Fire

JOELTON, Tenn. -- There has been a loss of life after a fire broke out at an animal rehabilitation building in Joelton that houses hundreds of wild animals now during peak baby season.

The Nashville Fire Department was called out to an alarm at Walden's Puddle at around 3:30 a.m. on Jackman Road to find smoke. They quickly knocked down the fire.

Several fawns and a hawk have died, according to Lane Brody, the chairman of the board for Walden's Puddle. An exact count of animals that died is not known.

Brody is on scene. She said the mammal room was primarily affected. She is asking for the public to pray for her animals.

The fire reportedly started in the laundry room. It is unknown if it is related, which was about to undergo remodeling.

Firefighters had to be shuttled to the facility due to a narrow hill leading to it.

Walden's Puddle provides care and treatment to sick, injured and orphaned native Tennessee wildlife. Anyone who would like to donate or volunteer, can go to their website CLICK HERE, or call 615-714-4002.

The facility, which only got smoke detectors 6 months ago, is working to shelter the animals from the heat and keep them cool.
