NASHVILLE, Tenn-- The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed the first case of West Nile Virus this year.

A Shelby County resident is currently recovering, marking 2014's first human contraction. Along with West Nile Virus, recent cases of Chikungunya virus has also raised cause for concern in the Volunteer state. According to TDH Commissioner John Dreyzehner, "Reducing breeding areas is an old strategy we need to bring back to protect our families, neighbors and customers, so in addition to personal bite protection, we urge people across Tennessee to remove standing water around their homes and businesses."
