Alabama Milk Depot Seeks Donations from Lactating Mothers

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama's first nonprofit milk depot, the Mothers' Milk Bank Of Alabama, has opened in Birmingham.

WBRC-TV reports that the goal is to collect milk and give it to babies being treated in neonatal intensive care units.

WBMA-TV reports that the milk bank will accept donations from lactating mothers.

Organizers say the milk is bottled and then shipped to a plant in north Texas for pasteurization. After that, the milk is shipped out to hospitals across the U.S.

Mary Kelly, executive director for the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, said that for now, Mothers' Milk Bank of Alabama will only serve as a collection site.

The goal is that the Alabama site will eventually transition into a local bank to serve babies in Birmingham hospitals after funding and equipment is secured.
