The Nashville Electric Service will be using a loud sound cannon to scare away pigeons they say could potentially cause a power outage.

The utility company said pigeons are roosting at NES Central Substation, which provides electricity for a third of the downtown Nashville area.

"We have not experienced any recent power outages, but the potential is there because of the increased number of birds in the substation, said NES Operations Manager Jack Baxter. The cannon should scare the pigeons and make them find someplace safer to roost.

NES said sound cannon produces a loud noise similar to firecrackers and disrupts their nesting pattern.

Beginning Tuesday, July 22 and for the next several weeks, NES will use the sound cannon between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. It will sound off only once every hour for a total of three per night.
