The Tennessee Department of Health confirmed on Friday that Tennessee has had 12 cases of Chikungunya.

"This includes our first case that we announced back in June," said department spokeswoman Shelley L. Walker in an email to FOX 17. "All the Tennessee cases involve individuals who became infected with the virus while traveling in the Caribbean."

The virus, which can cause joint pain and arthritis-like symptoms, has been on the U.S. public health radar for some time.

CNN contributed to this report.
