NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- Chief Engineer Paul Degges and TDOT Commissioner John Schroer provided an update on the status of the Peytonsville Bridges after a tanker truck exploded on I-65 this morning.

According to Commissioner Schroer, both lanes of I-65 by the bridges will be shut down starting at 6am Saturday morning. They expect to have the northbound lanes open by 5am Monday morning and then both directions open by 2pm Monday afternoon for those commuting to and from downtown Nashville.

The cost of the damage is into the millions according to Chief Engineer Degges and a claim will be filed with the insurance companies. He said there was "massive devastation" to both bridges due to the accident, adding some of the steel was "cooked."

As for Peytonsville Bridge traffic, both east and west access will be shut down for an "extended period of time" according to Commissioner Schroer. He asked residents and commuters call 5-1-1 for updates or check the TDOT Smartway App for closure updates.

November of 2016 was the original completion date for the bridge project, but now that time-frame has been significantly delayed.
