Saving You Money: Energy Costs During Heat Wave

With the sun bearing down this week and the heat index in the hundreds,
there are four ways to cut your energy costs.  Let's start with the biggest energy drain.  That's your air conditioner.

First, set your AC five degrees higher to cut your costs 20 percent.
Using a ceiling fan helps, but a programmable thermostat helps you stay disciplined.

Second,  cut off that cable box.   66 percent of its power is wasted while it sits on with no one watching.  Consider installing a lamp timer to turn it off when you're not home.

The Natural Resources Defense Council says your dryer uses as much energy as your refrigerator, dishwasher and clothes washer combined.
Consider hanging clothes to dry or dry loads back to back to reduce the warm up and drying time.

Number 4, adjust your water heater.  Most homes can get by with it set at 120 degrees.  You can save up to $30 a year by turning it down just 10 degrees and shut it off if you're out of town.
