NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Eric Alvarez) -- The state health department is calling prescription drug abuse an epidemic in Tennessee, and they're cracking down on two Rutherford County pharmacies.

The state's board of pharmacy found the Corder's Community Pharmacy in Smyrna was missing more than 5,800 hydrocodone pills and suspended its license.

The Murfreesboro Pain Management Clinic surrendered its certification after investigators found the business allegedly distributed controlled substances but did not keep proper records.

The pharmacy board says these are just two local examples of a statewide problem.

"It's not just east middle or west Tennessee, it's all over the state and it's something we've got to get under control," said Reggie Dilliard, pharmacy board executive director.

Tennessee has ranked among the worst states in the country when it comes to prescription drug abuse, according to the state department of mental health.
