The brand new Ford Ice Center in Antioch will open Sept. 12. The state-of-the-art ice skating facility will be the practice home of the Nashville Predators and the location of Olympian Scott Hamilton's skating academy.

The center was built at the Global Mall at the Crossings, once known as the Hickory Hollow Mall. The mall is undergoing a revitalization, including a new library, the ice rink, a new satellite campus for Nashville State Community College and new stores and restaurants inside the mall that are already open.

The Ford Ice Center cost $40 million to build. The 86,000-square-foot hockey center has two stories and includes two multi-purpose ice rinks, team rooms, meeting rooms and an observation mezzanine.

"I think it's a fantastic addition to the area," said Chris Parker with the ice center. "It's a $40-million dollar complex -- a huge investment by the Metro government -- including both a branch public library, as well as a rec center here on the property, 5-acre park. I think it's just a tremendous space. I think people will be thrilled to come out here."
The center offers hockey leagues for adults and kids, as well as figure skating programs.

Country music star Vince Gill just made a donation to give scholarships so needy kids can skate there.

Once the center opens, it will cost $10 per hour to skate, though it will offer specials, including free ice skating periods next week. Contact the center for more information, FordIceCenter.com.
