Miss Tennessee Saves a Life, Fine Tunes Her First Aid Skills -- Kai Beech

Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 4:30am and News at 9pm.

The 2014 Miss Tennessee, Hayley Lewis, is more than just a pretty face; she's a bona-fide hero after saving a competitor with the Heimlich maneuver.

"After three or four thrusts she finally dislodged the chicken," Lewis said.

That was part of a pageant this beauty queen will never forget.

"It was not the most lady-like thing," Lewis joked.

Maybe not lady-like but definitely lifesaving. At a civic luncheon during the 2014 Miss Tennessee competition, Lewis went from contestant to hero.

"We were having lunch and my friend, who is a fellow pageant contestant and a good friend of mine, starts doing the international sign for choking," Lewis said.

And that's when Lewis took matters into her own hands.

"I jumped across the table and performed the Heimlich maneuver," she said. "She dislodged the chicken; it was really dry that day I suppose. But now she's doing fine."

And now Lewis is renewing her CPR training and taking a first aid course at the American Red Cross in Nashville. She also recorded a public service announcement for the non-profit.

"I was not expecting to do that during competition week and at it happened," Lewis said. "So at Miss America I will be prepared if any girl goes choking again."
