Metro Water Services announced it was completing on Friday the construction of a temporary third pipe to alleviate the water shortage brought on by the failure of a 30-foot pipe. In a press conference, a spokesperson also said that the utility expects repairs to take a week.

The failure of the pipe has left 15,000 residents in Davidson County with no water or reduced water pressure.

Officials say that homes in the highest elevation are hardest hit -- Northumberland homes being affected the most.

Sonia Harvat, Metro Water Services spokesperson, said it takes five pumps to reach those higher houses.

In the Friday afternoon press conference, officials also assure residents that the fire department is equipped to fight any fires that may come up.

In all, officials are expecting repairs to take a week.

"Our system should be back to normal (then)," Harvat said.
