DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) -- Davenport police say an Iowa mother tried to teach her 6-year-old son a safety lesson by shooting him with a BB gun.

The Quad-City Times reports 25-year-old Courtney Kie-Marie Owens was arrested Tuesday and charged with child endangerment with injury. The charge is a felony that carries a penalty of five years in prison.

Police say Owens had just gotten the BB gun when her son kept trying to play with it. They say she tried to explain to the child that the gun isn't a toy before purposely shooting him in the hip.

Police say he suffered a red swollen welt and was treated at the scene.

Owens was released from the Scott County Jail Tuesday night after posting $5,000 bond. Online jail records didn't indicate an attorney.
