FRANKLIN (Jen French) -- FOX 17 found that there has been a steady increase in crashes at the interchange where a tanker truck driver was killed Friday.

The following numbers include all crashes compiled by either TDOT or the Tennessee Highway Patrol that have occurred at the I65/ Peytonsville Bridge interchange.

A TDOT spokesperson because 2014 isn't over, their biannual 2013-2014 data isn't complete. They collect data submitted by law enforcement agencies.

Between 2010-2012, TDOT says there have been 21 crashes at the Peytonsville /I65 interchange.

Between 2013-2014 TDOT says there have been 20 crashes so far.

More crashes have been happening in construction zones.

FOX 17 also contacted highway patrol who said all police departments, sheriff offices, and troopers submit accident reports to them.

A highway patrol spokesperson said there have been 21 crashes that exceeded $400 dollars in damage in 2014 so far.

  • In 2014 there were 15
  • In 2013, there were 7
  • In 2011 there were 5
  • In 2010 there were 4

People in Franklin say the bad traffic may also be because so many people have moved to the city over the past year.

"When the highway gets down four to two (lanes) sometimes it can take me an hour to get home from work when it takes me 15 minutes to get to work. So- it's hard," Seth Morris said.

TDOT uses traffic information and population predictions to help them start new projects.

TDOT started the $46 million Peytonsville bridge last year- because they expected more people to move to Franklin.

After the crash, the bridge will be torn down and rebuilt.  No word on how much that will cost or when it will be done.
